SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

THE SUSAN G. KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION PROVIDES  SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS IMPACTED BY BREAST CANCER

Local Affiliate Offers Information, Application Forms for Interested Students

Tri-Cities – September 6, 2006 – The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the nation’s largest private source of funding for breast cancer research and community-based outreach programs is accepting applications to award four-year undergraduate scholarships to qualified students who lost a parent to breast cancer.

The Komen Foundation College Scholarship Award helps students cover the costs of tuition, books, fees and on-campus room and board. The scholarship is specifically intended to help those qualified students who would otherwise find attending college to be a significant financial burden, due to the loss of a parent to breast cancer.

The Komen Foundation College Scholarship Award recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service and participation, financial need, and demonstrated leadership potential.

“Breast cancer is a disease that encompasses the entire family. Losing a parent to breast cancer can significantly impact a student’s ability to continue, or even begin, a college career. This scholarship program is a way to help qualified students to realize their dreams of higher education,” said Betty DeVinney of the Komen Tri-Cities Affiliate.

Basic information about the Komen Foundation Scholarship Award program and application forms are available by contacting Katie Yates at (423)-279-7637 or kjyates@northeaststate.edu.  Interested students may also visit www.komen.org to download an electronic application form.

Students must complete the application form, provide all needed documentation and submit their application packets to Komen Foundation Headquarters in Dallas, TX. All completed application materials must be received at Komen Headquarters no later than November 1, 2006 as a condition of being chosen for a scholarship.

A total of seven scholarships will be awarded. Announcement of the scholarship awards will be made by the Komen Foundation on March 31, 2007.
